Recently received: Another World by Elisabeth Tonnard. For me, this pint-sized photo book is a perfect balance of visual interest and concept, combined with a little viewer interaction to boot.

The photographs were taken in a single day and sit alongside newspaper headlines from the same day. With titles such as; ‘US halting millions in Aid to Pakistan’ and ‘Russia: 102 missing after boat sinks in Volga’.

After realising the weight of these events and the attached emotions, you’re able to venture to the opposite page where you can (with the aid of the provided magnifying glass) discover this other world, little creatures living out their days in the peace and quite of the field. Without the magnifying glass it’s hard to see what they’re actually doing but when you get there, it’s a pleasant surprise indeed. Thanks for this gorgeous book Elizabeth.

I’ve been doing a bit of work for the Melbourne Museum of late. Here’s a fossil I’ve recently photographed, this particular fellow was discovered and prepared by Charles Darwin in 1851, 8 years before the release of his publication On The Origin of Species. Most of Darwin’s specimens are in the U.K, though this one apparently made it’s way to Melbourne in the late 19th century, via the once legal fossil trade. Cheers Darwin!

I’ve just received Nan Goldin’s ‘The Devil’s Playground’ . She’s an artist I had once overlooked, probably because I’d thought the interest in her work was owing more to subject matter than artistic merit. Well now I’m gladly eating my opinions and loving it. This mammoth monograph is 500 pages long, and gives you a divine insight into the world of Nan Goldin, it’s a pictorial autobiography of her life, dark and poetic.

Lucille has this uncanny ability to blink at the precise moment the shutter opens. Out of everyone I’ve ever photographed she has scored the highest, having blinked in about 80% of all the photos I took.
